Typical Challenges
Some may assume that moving into management provides greater control over technical aspects, the reality often proves the opposite.
Engineers are inherently creative individuals who thrive on having ownership of their work.
As an engineering manager, a crucial part of your responsibility is to foster an environment that empowers engineers to exercise this creativity and ownership. Rather than dictating technical details, your role shifts towards enabling and supporting your team to make those decisions themselves.

People
People
Recognise the primary focus of EMs is people first and technology second. Create a positive and supportive work environment, where team members feel valued and are motivated to perform at their best. Understand how those people work best together to build teams and organisational structures.
Process
Process
Understanding of the processes used in software engineering (i.e. as agility, Kanban, etc.) and the ability to make informed decisions about which processes are best suited to your projects.
Product
Product
Develop a clear understanding of what their stakeholders expect from the final product. Make informed decisions about the features and functionality that should be included, and the ability to communicate these decisions to your teams effectively.
Technology
Technology
Understand that although you may know something better than someone first starting in their career, they are closer to the problem than you and you need to give them space to take ownership. You may not be the person to make the decision such as the exact coding standards, but you need to ensure the decision is made.
